Allahabad is
a 'tale of two cities'. The old city has a
glorious past and the new city that is rubbing
shoulders with modernity. The antiquity of the
place relates to sangam the confluence of the
scared waters of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the
invisible Saraswati. This holy confluence of the
three rivers has accorded it the status ofTeerthraj
that finds a mention even in this Purans.
These rivers has played an important role in weaving
the socity and cultural fabric of the city which
is which is visited by pilgrims from virtually
every corner rom country during the month of Magh
Allahabad is located on 82.5E degrees longitude.
This longitude has been standarised for deciding
the the Indian Standard Time(IST). IST is 5 hours
30 minutes ahead of Greenwhich Mean Time(GMT),
which is the standard time for the whole world.
Also home to several legendary figures who have
illuminated the field of music, literature, academics
and even in films, the city has in the recent
past has struggled with its existence as an educational
canter. Several premier institutions of national
repute like Indian Institute of Information Technology
(IIIT), Motilal Institute of Technology, GB Pant
Institute of social sciences, Harish Chandra Research
Institute have been established in the city.
Spreading the light of education even outside
the city, Allahabad station of Gyanvani, the first
FM educational radio channel, similarly with a
science City on the cards, the city is surely
taking giant stride in the field of education.
Keeping the cultural light in North Central Zone
Cultural Center (NCZCC) with its wide range of
activities that strengthens the folk sub-structure.
Allahabad has the distinction of having given
maximum number of Prime Ministers to the country.
These names also include our first Prime minister
Pd. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Many top Indian celebrities
who have set new benchmarks in various fields
have their roots in Allahabad. The name of "Man
of The Millennium" Amitabh Bachchan needs no special
mention. Shubha Mudgal, a famous Vocalist, are
some of the other names who have been nurtured
by the city.
Allahabad also boasts of having some very important
Government Offices like Allahabad High Court etc.
Located at height of 340 feet above sea level,
the city is constantly undergoing cultural and
social metamorphosis with mushrooming of high
rise commercial buildings and new residential
colonies. The city is certainly acquiring cosmopolitan
look.
