| Allahabad is an important city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in north India. Allahabad was the capital of the United Provinces from 1901 to 1949 and the center of the Indian independence movement. Allahabad stands on the site of ancient city Prayag. Prayag was a holy city that was comparable in fame to Varanasi (Benares) and Haridwar. The modern city of Allahabad was founded in 1583 by Mughal emperor Akbar. Allahabad can be said to be an administrative and educational centre of Uttar Pradesh. Many of the offices of State of Uttar Pradesh are located in this city including The High Court of Uttar Pradesh - the Allahabad High Court. Allahabad has many educational institutions including many deemed universities and the famous Allahabad University. The famous ancient system of healing "Ayurveda" originated in Allahabad. |
